This week I learned that the name this project had carried since the first line of code, Ringfall, is a registered trademark. Not mine. I had lived with that word for long enough that it had stopped being a name and become the thing itself, so the first evening was mostly the dull ache of letting it go. Then I did what you do: I looked for a name that says what the game is about, found that salvagewar.com was free, and took it. The game is Salvage War. I am writing it here so it is said.
The new wordmark. The ring fragment stays. What changed
The name, and only the name. No subtitle this time; the two words carry it. Every page of this site, the feed, the logo, the preview image that shows up when a link is shared, all of it was renamed in a day. The wordmark was the part I was afraid of, because the old one was a wide, squared typeface that I never had as a font. I generated the new one in the same spirit, cut it out, and it sat in the header that evening looking like it had always been there. The ring fragment in the mark did not change at all. It was never about the name.
What did not
The world. The Meridian Ring still fell on the fourteenth of March 2094, the belt under its old orbit is still where the game is played, the Consortium still wants its property back and the League still calls it reparation. Ringsalvage is still the resource, because that is a thing in the world and not a brand. The first map is still the Fallen Frontier. If anything, the new name sits closer to what you actually do for the whole match: pull the sky apart before the other side does.
The two days I would like back
Renaming the site took an afternoon. Getting the new address to answer took two days, and I want to be honest about why, because it was not the name. I added the domain at the host the site had lived on since launch, pointed it at the folder, and got a bare 404 from their front door. Every setting I could see was right. Support confirmed it was right. A job on their side had stopped half way and nothing in the panel could restart it, and on a Friday afternoon the honest answer was that someone would look at it next week. So on Friday afternoon I moved the whole site to Cloudflare instead. It took about an hour, the certificate came with it, and the address answered. I should have done that first, and I am saying so here because the next person to hit that wall will search for it.
Still to do
The old name is not gone yet. The game build still shows it on the title screen and in the window title, the trailer on YouTube still opens with it, the store and social images in the press kit still carry it, and the Discord server still wears it. Each of those gets the new wordmark in turn, and I will note it here as it happens. The old web address is switched off on purpose rather than redirected; the name should not be in use anywhere I can help it. If you followed a link that no longer works, this is where it went.
